Abstract
Recently, cosmetic eyebrow tattooing has become popular in Korean women. Granulomatous reactions are being noted with increasing frequency following cosmetic eyebrow tattooing. We also experienced fourteen cases from 1988 to 1992.
We want to know the cause of granulomatous reaction following cosmetic eyebrow tattooing. So, we studied these cases retrospectively and tried to analysis the causative elements from the tattoo dye.
All patients had tattooed by amateurs in beauty salons or by other wondering amateurs using little or no sterile technique. Pigment was scattered irregularly at deep dermis or subcutaneous fat layer in histopathology. Cobalt, calcium, chromium,
lead,
aluminum, and nickel, which were known to be capable of producing both delayed hypersensitivity and granulomatous hypersensitivity, were detected from the tattoo dye by inductively coupled plasma spectrometry.
